Calendar Concepts

This week we focused on calendar concepts. We have been studying calendar concepts since the first day of school, but we spent this week practicing the order of the days of the week and months of the year. The kids have learned several songs about the days of the week. Perhaps you've already heard them, but the new one that the kids learned this week is to the tune of The Adams Family. I read Heckedy Peg by Audrey Wood. (I recommend the story if you are headed out to the library.) Some of the characters in the story were named after the days of the week. The children helped me list these characters whenever they were mentioned in the story. Then, the students discovered that the days of the week were always capitalized. They identified the days of the week from a group of words and pasted them in order. They have also been identify which day of the week comes before, after, and between other days of the week.

The kids are also very good at singing and dancing the Months of the Year Macarena. It works out perfectly to sing the months of the year with the Macarena which as twelve dance moves. If your student hasn't showed it to you yet, you should definitely ask for a performance! The students used the song to glue the months of the year in order. This had us practicing our reading skills as well as our math skills. We made a graph showing who was born in each month. The students have also been identifying which month comes before, after, and between other months of the year.
