Wow, we had a day jam-packed with activities centered around the number 100!
The kids presented collections of 100 items, made crowns out of the number 100, proved that they can jump and clap 100 times, and they even did 100 push-ups! The purpose of spending an entire day devoted to the number 100 is to build number awareness and to develop skip counting skills. At snack time the kids each made a 100 piece snack mix. Here is the recipe:
10 pieces of popcorn
10 pretzels
10 mini marshmallows
10 chocolate chips
10 raisins
10 dried cranberries
10 pieces of Kix cereal
10 pieces of Cheerios cereal
10 pieces of Chex cereal
We know that if we have 10 sets of 10 we have 100. It was quite a tasty snack!
After snack, the kids put each 100 stickers on the number 100. The stickers were prepared in strips of 10. The kids counted by 10s as they determined which stickers they would use.
The last project of the day had us counting by 5s. The kids used floss threaders as "needles" to thread beads onto yarn. They counted out sets of 5 beads for a total of 100 beads. This activity had the kids working on fine motor skills just as much as counting. Most of the kids are just beginning to learn how to count by 5s. When your student brings home the necklace, help them to count the beads by 5s.
